Grenada, on the tail-end of the string of islands that comprise the West Indies is like something out of a Gaugan painting. You get the sense that neither western civilization nor the 20th century has really intruded. There is an immense mountainous rainforest, a colorful market with everything from home grown root vegtables to every variety of spice. The people seem open in a genuine way and accessible to outsiders in a way that suggests they have not frequently encountered the "Ugly American" tourist. Any lingering feelings about the American invasion seem to be pro-American.
