When I first visited St. John 20 years ago, I imagined that this stunning little isle would soon be overdeveloped and spoiled of its' low key charm and natural beauty. After another half dozen visits, the last being 2 years ago, I can say that this fortunately has not happened. St. John has largely been saved by the beneficence of John D. Rockefeller who donated the land which made 2/3 of the island a National Park, forever protected from development. It also has no airport, no cruise ship dock and no casinos. It has a dusty little town with a least a dozen quite good resturants and some interesting arts and crafts. It draws those who love the beach, hiking, camping and a low key vacation full of sun, the turquoise blue of the sea and nature's wonders. Please visit my BRITISH VIRGIN ISLAND'S travelogue to learn about another wonderful group of islands. Art by Anissa Roth WWW.ANISSA.VI |
