i am a 59-year-old single white woman, so all of my comments are from that perspective. i have been going to puerto vallarta almost annually since about 1990.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:friendly people, beautiful area, beaches, sunshine, many english-speakers but the city is not overrun with north americans
  • Cons:downtown and the buses are not handicapped-accessible
  • In a nutshell:the closest to paradise i've ever been
  • Last visit to Puerto Vallarta: Dec 2003

this large shop has every imaginable kind of decorative tile -- ceramic, terra cotta, etc. -- and in every imaginable... more travel advice

    well said. after years of living here i can say this is pretty accurate about the downtown flea markets. most of the retail stores in town don't bargain, prices are generally fixed. vendors bargain at the open/municipal markets and on the beach.

    I love my week in Puerta Vallarta, or rather in a hotel outside. Next time I'd like to stay in the city itself. Your tips and local customs suggestion are very good. Thanks.

    Hi Susie, enjoyed your tips. I just returned from my 1st trip to MX- the Yucatan. I've been working on my pgs and am reading others to keep the "travel-feeling" going. Want to go the PV next--as soon as possible.
