new smyrna beach is a lovely town with many beaches, good shopping, and some interesting places nearby.

on my most recent trip (april, 2005), i saw many houses and accommodations still being repaired from the hurricanes of summer, 2004. however, it did not seem difficult to find places to stay (i saw lots of "vacancy" signs). there is plenty of beach space available when the tide is out.

one really nice thing about volusia county (where new smyrna beach is located) is that there is public beach access at multiple places; these are well marked with signs on south atlantic avenue.

i stayed on what they call the "island" side rather than the "mainland." there are two bridges to get from the "mainland" to the "island" side, and going back and forth is very easy.

to get to new smyrna beach, you can fly to orlando (60 miles away) or daytona beach (20 miles away). if you are driving from ORLANDO, avoid I-4 at all costs. it is crowded, slow, and frustrating, despite its direct appearance on a map. see two alternative routes in "transportation" tips.
