Montréal is a city full of contrasts. Build around the Mont Royal, it covers now almost all the surface (and even the underground) of the island were it sits (almost 30km long). The city center is a mixture of churches (a lot of them, is interesting to see that peaceful confrontation sometimes gives good results), monumental old buildings (most inherited from Scots) and some big modern ones (mainly at downtown). Maybe not very different from other north-north american cities... till you meet the people living there: definitively, a unique character and way of life, half way from the new world inhabitants found in southern cities (still in Canada, like Toronto) and the completely special one found at higher latitudes (like in Québec City) or smaller vilages, where that cultural difference is more than apparent... :) |
