This is a little unexpected, at least in Rome. Actually, there are several egyptian monuments in Rome (most of them obelisks), but this is the biggest I saw... just opposite the metro station with the same name.

Although in Rome you may be for culture, art, stones... well, in case you have some need of open spaces and air, using the same metro ticket (1 euro), you can reach the beach by train (Ostiense line) in less than an hour from Rome center. Not the beaches I'm used to, but enough for a pleasant walk in winter (this picture is Jan 1st, 2004, I have to say, after 3 days continously raining). An easy point to leave the train is Lido Centro. Maybe when returning, you want to have a cultural stop at the near Ostia Antica station....

All around the city you find old pieces spread like flowers on a field after the rain. This is just found between newer buildings, just under your feet, in the middle of the street. Still under recovery... and not difficult to find: just crossing the Tiber from the Trastevere by the Tiberina island (Ponte Fabricio), walk straight ahead a few tens meters by Via del Portico d'Ottavia, and you'll find some columns on your right (just emerging from the street pavement!). Then look around, follow the column path, and voilà!

Even parks have some roman remains, but the environment helps to make it a more relaxed visit. Try the area of Pza. di Siena (all the green area between the Galleria Borghese, the zoo, and the Pincio and Villa Medici), enough for an hour walking by some green paths... also if you like horse riding, you can do it without getting out of the city, here.
