<font face=timesnewroman color=#000099 size=2>On the 28 March 2001, I had my first trip to Scotland. Although it's so close to Northern Ireland, I've never had the need or desire to spend any time there before. Visiting England often in the car, Scotland had just been the country we've had to pass through. It never meant much to me, till now.
One of my friends from school, Linda, is now studying at Napier University in Edinburgh and after hearing her glowing report of Edinburgh, I realised I had to see it for myself. Fortunately, she was only too happy to let me stay with her. So, there I was one cold Wednesday afternoon, sitting on a train on my way to this wonderful city. Looking out of the window, Scotland was nothing like I'd ever seen before. There was miles of countryside with no sign of life, a bit like Northern Ireland, but then when I passed the small towns and villages, I was reminded of England. There were lots of quaint little train stations along the way but it was at Ayr station that I realised how amazing Scotland is. It was Ayr station with its big modern building and bustling activity alongside the beautiful countryside and fields full of sheep that showed me Scotland's unusual mixture of old and new. I watched in fascination as the train passed lots of little country cottages, many with rusty old caravans in the driveway and I couldn't help but smile when I saw the familiar big M of McDonalds.
Edinburgh was nothing like I expected. Ok it had the usual big city features like hundreds of buses and taxis but then right in the middle of it is a big hill with a castle on top! There's nothing like it. As I got off the train, I just knew "I was made to live in a city!"</font>
