I went to China teaching English and travelling for 10 weeks ! I was based in Guilin but moved around A LOT!
My pages are slowly coming together as I scan my photos and have time to write.
I hope to return in a few years to study Mandarin in Beijing, I'm learning a little here in the UK. But, we'll see!
Even if I do not go to University in China I plan to return at least once again either a conventional trip (i.e. by plane) to Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai etc. or...
...see St. Petersburg and Moscow and then travel using the trans-siberian railway all the way across Russia, through Mongolia, to Bejing; making many stops on the way and quite a few when I get to the end of the line!!
Anyway, so far my Hong Kong and Guangzhou pages are getting there, so feel free to take a look.
Please ignore the following, it's draft material for a future travelogue:
Cool, you'll have a great time! A degree will open up lots of jobs, you don't need TESOl and you don't need experience. You should have a bit of a liking for kids and be a little interested in teaching or at least english otherwise you won't enjoy it. I actually learnt new things which I was supposed to teach! e.g. phonetics.
I just went over on a 60 day tourist visa. Some of the other teachers who had been there longer had changed over to working visas. If you are there for the summer don't worry. The chinese authorities wont pick up on it (It's not so hardline over there as or govt would have us think) and even if they do they will proabably not bother, either because it's too much like hard work or they appreciate that you are helping their kids learn. A french guy had set up the school i taught with and he had been there 4 years on tourist visas!! As a foreigner you are supposed to register with the police in each town you visit if you are going to be there for a while. I only did this once because the guy i was staying with knew the police really well!
I had a really good time at some schools, a bit bored at others. This was mainly due to the people i was working with and the town itself though. If over the summer, most kids are being made to do extra english while their friends are out playing during the holidays. So, you of course get some little buggers. I found lifting them up above my head and giving them a shake taught them a lesson ;-) Imagine doing that over here! LOL!
Guangdong would be quite a good place to teach, I was based in guilin but got sent out to other places teaching. I expect the places on the net are fine. If you find they are scams, just go to an internet cafe, find another school and get a train! I know that sounds risky but its so easy really...
I WILL reccomend the school i taught at but just make sure you only go where you want to go, dont let them try and make you go to anywhere boring! As you are a native speaker - i think irish counts ;-) - you'll get preference anyway. The school is based in Guilin, a wonderful place and they have partner schools around. I enjoyed my time in yangshou and quanzhou and you could try and sort a job in guilin if you are gonna be there more than a couple of weeks. The website is www.jessienglish.com. From experince and discussions with other teachers, resist going to pingnan and hunan, but i guess a week would be ok. Main reason is there isnt really much in those places to see or do.
In guilin you'll meet long term teacher dan from london, who has his own bar there (fair play!) and also jay jay is a french guy who runs things, hes ok and the chinese helpers are cool too.
