Northland - the ideal summer getaway!

Northland is, as the name indicates, New Zealand's most northerly region. With Auckland to the south, this is a popular place for people from that city to holiday. The main tourist area is the Bay of Islands, but there are loads of beautiful and secluded bays and beaches where there are camp grounds or motels. Everyone I know has their favourite spot for their summer holiday somewhere different to the next person.
My last big trip to Northland was with a group of friends (including a fellow VTer - IcemanNZL) and my sister, in 2004. We only had four days based in Paihia. If you can, stay longer, but four days will give you a memorable taste of the region, especially if you have access to a car.
In January 2006, I had a couple of one-day trips to Northland, followed by a longer four day holiday with a couple of friends in the Bay of Islands. On one of these trips I rediscovered the beautiful Tutukaka Coast with its stunning beaches and coastal scenery.
This always was one of my favourite corners of New Zealand and my last trip there has only cemented that view of the place. Northland is a great place for a summer holiday... if you get a chance - go.

What can you do in Northland?

Swim, sunbathe, climb huge sand dunes, watch dolphins, sea kayak, sail, cruise, fish, walk, visit historic sites and buildings, eat, party, drink, snorkel, dive, learn about Maori culture, shop, relax.

Pros:"Low key tourism in most parts, warm weather, beautiful beaches."
Cons:"Lots of places can only be reached if you have your own car or boat."
In A Nutshell:"A beautiful and historic part of New Zealand."
