A deserted Kata Beach, Phuket. - Thailand

A deserted Kata Beach, Phuket.

Relax on Phuket Island.

My first visit to Phuket was less than pleasant due to dodgy seafood in the Phi Phi Islands, back in 2001. However in April 2004 I unwound there totally and didn't want to leave. Kata Beach was my favourite corner of the island. Phuket has elements that appeal to the thrill seeker, partier, or beach blobber!

Wat Phra Keow, Bangkok. - Thailand

Wat Phra Keow, Bangkok.

Experience Bangkok!

Bangkok is an Asian experience that is an absolute must do at least once in a lifetime. I was there during Songkran in April 2004, so I experienced a very different Bangkok to the usual traffic snarled, smoggy, action packed place that most people imagine. I saw three days of clear blue skies and on one day, virtually deserted streets!
Bangkok has many stunning temples that one simply must see. If you could only visit one, I would say choose Wat Phra Keow (the Emerald Buddha Temple).

Ao Nang Beach - Thailand

Ao Nang Beach

Visit the coast of Ao Nang.

The coast south of Ao Nang (about 12km west of Krabi) has one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. There's plenty of good (if a little expensive) accommodation in Ao Nang. It's a nice little beach resort type town. There's bars and shops, but it's all a bit less crass and in your face than Ko Phi Phi Don.
From Ao Nang, you can take a longtail boat for 50 Baht to the stunning beach of Hat Tham Pra Nang (known locally as Pra Nang Beach). You won't have the beach to yourself, but it is a beautiful spot, with floury soft white sand, clear water straight out of the travel brochure, and best of all there's only one unobtrusive eco-friendly design hotel on the beach (and you'll have to look hard through the trees to see it). Wow. Make sure you take a camera!
The photo here shows Ao Nang's beach, which is nice when the tide's in.

Directions: Ao Nang is about 12km west of Krabi town. There are 'local buses' (songthaew) from Krabi.
