  • Restaurant Name: Soba Houses - all over Japan.

This is not a single restaurant tip. Throughout Japan, one of the most affordable authentic dining experiences you can have is at a Soba House. It helps to learn the Japanese script for a Soba House, so you can find them easily when you're hungry. As their name implies, you will get soba there. Soba are noodles, like Italian spaghetti, cooked in a soup like way with vegetables and sometimes meat. You will usually get miso with your meal and possibly even some tempura (battered vegetables or prawns). This Soba House is in Kamakura. We had a warming and surprisingly filling meal there one chilly evening when we visited Kamakura on a day trip from Tokyo.

To add to the comment about money - if you come from the UK, many of our bank machines are not configured the same as Japanese banks. However, you should be able to extract money from the ATMs at Citibank.

1.5 days to explore Kyoto is defintely not enough. I was there for a few days and still, not enough time.
