"A slice of NZ that's a bit off the beaten trail!" Hawkes Bay by worldkiwi

Hawkes Bay Travel Guide: 238 reviews and 581 photos

Hawkes Bay is a region of New Zealand that tourists on the Auckland - Queenstown - Christchurch axis route don't usually see. Having your own car or campervan will allow you to explore this area of North Island that is reknown for its sunshine hours and long dry summers and autumns. The region is also North Island's foremost wine growing district and this is an added element worth sampling!
Napier is the 'capital' of the region, with Hastings ranking as the second city. Napier itself offers the visitor a range of sights and attractions and makes a good base from which to explore further afield.
My 2006 two day trip to this region was my first in over 23 year - perhaps even longer! I would certainly like to return to see more of this laid back and tranquil part of New Zealand.

Pros and Cons
