You might think it's impossible to get off the beaten trail in Venice. However, despite the cloying throngs of tourists around St Marks, there seems to be plenty of places to lose oneself in quiet little 'backwaters'. Make sure you try it. Get away from the crowds and just get lost. The sights you will see will be really rewarding.
