In July 2006, I visited North America for the first time. Spurred by the fact that my uncle and auntie were temporarily living in Seattle and the perhaps once in a lifetime chance to have a personalised tour of the Boeing Factory up near Everett, I decided to build a journey around the Pacific Northwest and northern California. The map above shows the approximate route of my journey from Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada, south to San Francisco over 21 days. The towns and cities marked are places where I stayed one night or more. Of course, there were several more places I stopped at and even spent a few hours in. Before going to North America, I had been warned about the dangers of this crime ridden continent - particularly the United States. Family in NZ warned me not to trust anyone and be vigilant all the time. I was nervous about driving over there - on the wrong side of the road and dealing with the sterotypical road-rage hyped American drivers. Well, none of these warnings or preconceptions proved true and my abiding memory of the Pacific Northwest is of a beautiful land, peopled by generous, warm, friendly, outward looking people. And I never experienced any road rage or crime! My perception of the USA has altered substantially and as for Canada - well that is just one cool place! It will probably be a long time before I get back to the Pacific Northwest and California. It is very expensive over there for us folk from little old New Zealand. But, I do hope I will get back one day. |
Have a look at my VT pages on Vancouver, Victoria, Seattle, Washington, Oregon, California, and San Francisco and hopefully you will see why this region of North America captivated me so. |
