Things To Do: Get out of town and see the scenery.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Queenstown is surrounded by stunningly beautiful mountain landscapes. The town itself is beside Lake Wakatipu and to the south, march the Remarkables, a range of mountains that proceed in a line down the east side of the lake. I've seen fantastic photos, of the same view as mine above, taken in winter when the white peaks of the Remarkables contrast beautifully with the blues of sky and lake.
Just a short drive away from Queenstown on the back road to Arrowtown, is Arthur's Point. The Shotover River runs through this gully and the famous Shotover Jet (a fast ride on a jet boat through the Shotover Gorge) operates from there. To the northwest is Glenorchy with its superb valleys and mountain views (see my Glenorchy page). Obviously in winter this place is a major drawcard for skiers, as there are three or four ski-fields in the vicinity of Queenstown. I can only imagine the views the skiers get from up on their mountains in winter!

Skyline Gondola, Restaurant and Luge.: What a view!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Queenstown Skyline Gondola, Restaurant and Luge.
  • Queenstown from Skyline.

  • Just about every tourist who comes to Queenstown experiences a ride on the gondola up to Skyline, the restaurant/cafe/shop with the great panorama of Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables, and Queenstown. There's also a luge there to ride on and you can bungy jump, swing, or take a paraglide as well!
I think it cost me NZ$14 to buy a return gondola ticket, but I can't be sure.
The view is stunning. Here's the title photo again just to tempt you...

TSS Earnslaw: Cruise across Lake Wakatipu.

  • OK... I have to admit I didn't do this, though when I left Auckland I had thought I might have. The TSS Earnslaw is a ninety something year old steamer that is an icon in Queenstown. She is a beautiful ship and if I went to Queenstown again I would definitely want to experience first hand what cruising aboard her is like. I think fares started at about NZ$37 when I was there.

I liked your observation of not being in the age group that jumps off high peaks in Queenstown. Well, I'm not in that group either, but going to there in August, I probably will jump anyway...if not, I'll never be able to muster the courage for it.
