There are displays on all the history of Texas from present times going back to the days of dinosaurs.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Palo Duro Canyon is one of my favorite things to do near Amarillo. In the photo you can see the visitor center. It is made of stone and perches on the canyon rim.
The canyon is 120 miles long and 20 miles wide and has been called the Grand Canyon of Texas. There is a lot of history associated with the canyon itself and much to see and do there. You can go camping, horseback riding, hiking, and bird watching just to name a few things. Don't forget to ride the 'sad monkey' railroad.

Directions: Take 27 or 87 South out of Amarillo toward the city of Canyon and you should see signs for Palo Duro. From Interstate 27 you will go East on Texas Highway 217 and drive East for about 10 minutes.

  • Tip Rating:
  • If you like horses check out the quarter horse museum. The American Quarter Horse Association has a museum and heritage center in Amarillo.
When you go inside you can watch a film about quarter horses and how they were developed then you can look around the museum. There are many exhibits for adults and children.

Directions: It is a beautiful building next to I-40. You can't miss it because it has large statues of quarter horses and their many uses in front of and on top of the building.

Sorry, the Sad Monkey Railroad closed several years ago. It is now a lawn ornament at a ranch HQ about 3.5 miles west of Palo Duro Canyon State Park.
