Lake Dixon--Escondido
Some of my fondest memories as a child are days my dad took us fishing. I got to be pretty good at it, but have forgotten much of what I knew, except that it's a relaxing way to spend a day.
There are two types of fishing in San Diego, salt water and fresh water.
Salt water fishing can be done from a boat or off one of the various piers found along the coast of San Diego. H & M Landing is a company located near Shelter Island and offers fishing trips for local and long range fishing.
Their fleet of ships for rent include luxury yachts, private charters as well as open party tickets, which is the most economical.
Albacore, tuna, yellowtail, Reds, Rockfish, Sand Bass, Perch and Sheephead are just a few names of fish that can be caught.
Fresh water fishing can be done from the shore, or from a row/motor boat at one of our many lakes. Usually, the yeild would be bass, trout or the bottom feeder, catfish.
Equipment: If you haven't your own fishing pole or boat, they can be rented and be sure to find out if a license is required. At some of the lakes an extra fee is charged, so check it out before beginning to fish.
This photo is of Lake Dixon, a small man-made lake in Escondido. The whole county of San Diego is spotted with lakes of all sizes and at some, fishing is not all that is offered.
H & M Landing's address and phone number are given here as well as their website. If it is fresh water fishing that interests you, take a look at the City, County or State "Parks & Recreation" websites for more info.

Padre Parade
Broadway is the main street in the downtown area.
Though our San Diego Padres Baseball team lost the bid for the World Series, the fans welcomed them home with a huge parade down Broadway! Imagine what would happen if we had won! The same thing happened when the SD Chargers didn't win the Super Bowl! It seems that as a city, winning isn't important, it's having the sport to enjoy that we treasure.
Although, I'll have to say when a bunch of little 11 & 12 year old "Little League" boys from Chula Vista Park View, won the World Series of Little League, the whole County of San Diego cheered and talked about it for months!
If you happen to be here during football or baseball season and can't afford the price of a Pro-Game, there are hundreds of games being played at high schools and colleges that will offer much of the same thrill at a reduced price.
Check it out.

SAILING ON THE BAY
There are Yatch Clubs and Boat Marinas all around the Bay of San Diego. Boating and sailing are popular all year long. At various times of the year racing sail boats can be easily distinguished from the average seen out on the Bay. Most notable we a reggata is taking place is the number, style and speed of the boats. It is a wonderful site on the Bay. The biggest event to be seen is the "World Series- America's Cup Race, which takes place in various parts of the world, including San Diego.
Also as I've mentioned in Things To Do: Maritime Museum, on some weekends a couple of the historical sailing vessels belonging to the Maritime Museum, sail out on the Bay and have a mock battle, you could join in on that as well or just watch from a spot on Harbor Island Drive.
Equipment: If you haven't your own boat you can rent one to join in the fun. Here are several boat rental companies conveniently located throughout San Diego:

Surfing at Ocean Beach Pier
Every day of the year, in San Diego, there are suffers riding the waves at the beaches where surfing is allowed. The Pacific Ocean is usually cool but that doesn't stop lovers of this sport.
San Diego Coast line has played an important role in surfing history in California. San Onofre, Corona del Mar, Windansea and The Tijuana Sloughs in Imperial Beach are among the list of favorites for the professional surfer. If however, you are a novice surfer there is plenty of room for you too.
Equipment: There are surf shops all along the beach area where you can rent/buy surf boards, wet suits or a number of other water sports items.
There are also places in San Dieog that you can go to take lessons, or even have a surfboard designed especially for you.
Address: Along the Coast of San Diego
Directions: Imperial Beach, Ocean Beach, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, La Jolla and on and on up the coast.

A view from the east side.
Just in time for the 2004 Baseball Season, Petco Park opened it's gates April 2004. Creating this downtown ballpark was rather controversial and there were many delays, but all that's over now and San Diego has a beautiful, state-of-the-art home for the San Diego Padres and their fans.
The outside structure, at the moment, looks a bit industrial to me, but soon, the steel and concrete will be covered with lovely plants hanging from each tier. This photo does not do the park justice as it is an obscure view from the west gate. However, I saw another view from another street and hope to put a better photo here instead.
Equipment: This is a spectator sport so the only equipment you'll need is the trusty plastic or cold hard cash. The price of a seat varies depending upon the location. At the back of the field, there is a park area in back of the field, that can be accessed for free when a game is not in progress and the entrance fee to watch during a game is very reasonable.
I'd suggest that even if you have the use of a car, it would be simpler to take the SD Trolley to the ball park, There is a station quite near.

Home to the Padres no more!
Until just recently, Qualcomm Stadium was home to San Diego Chargers, The Padres, San Diego State University Aztecs, and the Holiday Bowl.
San Diego's professional Baseball team, The San Diego Padres, no doubt was named after the priests who established the San Diego Mission, no longer play at Qualcomm. As of April 2004 the Padres have moved their venue to Petco Park.
However if it is American football you want to see, go to Qualcomm! The SD Trolley has a station at the parking lot of Qualcomm making it very convenient to use public transportation to get there and back.
There is a strong possibility that either a New Statium will be built in the near future here or the Chargers will leave San Diego for another city. So, take the opportunity while you can.
Equipment: There is no equipment required to watch a game here, but bring your plastic shovel--Credit Card--if you want to have a drink or something to eat. It's not cheap either.
Also, if you really want the whole experience then fill up your car with a portable BBQ, an ice chest full of food to cook and drinks to enjoy, arrive early and have a Tailgate Party with the local fans!!
Tailgating, as it's known, is allowed in the huge parking lot at Qualcomm and if you've never been to one, this could be a fantastic experience while in San Diego during Football Season!
Address: 9449 Friars Road
Directions: In Mission Valley. Just take the trolley to Qualcomm.
