Discretely tucked away
These cottages are smaller, older houses renovated in bright, shiney colors with a beachcomer feel. They are fully equipt with linens and everything you could possibly need in the kitchen to do as much, or as little cooking as you'd like. They offer maid service so you have all the comforts of home and don't have to clean-up after yourself. Perfect!!
The location on Brighton Avenue is about two blocks from the beach and about a half mile north of all the action on New Port Avenue. What makes these cottages ideal is the location and the fact that they offer weekly and monthly rates.
However, there seems to be a problem, they never have anything available. So, if this is an option you'd be interested in call well in advance to see if you can get in or not.
Address: 5026 & 5065 Brighton Avenue, Ocean Beach, CA 92107

Ocean Beach Hotel viewed from the pier.
The first time I saw the Ocean Beach Motel, it was painted pink and looked a bit shabby, but still it was the place I would have chosen to stay if I hadn't lived so near. Since then, the family owned and operated motel has been revitalized and given a promotion in status from motel to hotel.
Based on price and location, this is the hotel I'd stay at.
Unique Qualities: $79.00 to $119.00 per night is the most unique quality considering it's location. Any farther west and it would be on the sand and probably washed away like the Amusement park built up where Dog Beach is now! The corner of Abbot Street and Newport Avenue is the starting point for all the action in Ocean Beach. The beach is west, pier is just south, shopping, restaurants and bars are east.
The rooms seem to be organized to allow either a courtyard view or an ocean view. Parking is free and in this community that is a real convenience, especially since everything is within walking distance--even for me.
Address: 5080 Newport Avenue
Comparison: less expensive than average
Looks Small But isn't
This New England-ish style B & B was built a little more than ten years ago. Katie and Phil Elsbree who live on site have lent their name to the house and turned it into a great romantic get-a-way as well as the perfect spot for a family vacation.
Unique Qualities: Narragansett Avenue is a block south of Newport Avenue and about a half block east of the beach.
During the summer the minimum stay, with advanced reservations is three nights for a Bed and Breakfast room. The price ranges between $150 to $250 per night plus tax depending on the number of people staying in the room. The rooms have a queen bed, a private bath and private entry.
The Condos offered are two and three bedroom suites, one to three baths, a private entry and are competly furnished. The price ranges between $300 to $350 per night with a four night minimum or $1600 to $1800 a week.

The rooms are large, they have queen and king sized beds with sofa sleepers in Family Units. Some rooms have private balcony or patio with views of the ocean, waterways or up to Mission Bay and some rooms have refrigerators, microwaves or a small kitchenette.
You might want to contact them to see if any of their daily and "off season" rates are in effect. and pay even less!
Unique Qualities: If I had a dog to travel with, this is the place I'd stay. It is a fifty's style motel located next to Ocean Beach's Dog Beach and they allow pets to stay with guests and offer "Dog Comfort Zones." Can't beat that!
Some amenities are heated swimming pool, laundry, beach shower and free parking as well as the usual TV,Cable and Coffee.

Comparison: less expensive than average

OB Int'l Hostel
Most hostels in the USA have an age limit, usually between 18 and 26. This is not the case at the Ocean Beach International Hostel, which is independently owned.
At this hostel, "international" is the key word. All nationalities are accepted but if you are from the USA you must either show a dated stamp on your passport that proves you have just returned from international travel or you must be a card carrying I.H. Member.
I have not stayed here but everyone I know of who has, raves about it. So, I feel pretty confident suggesting it. I've passed by many times and always there is at least one relaxed person kicking back on the front porch watching the people and traffic traveling this section of Newport Avenue.
The Newport Hotel was refurbished into an international youth hostel and though I've seen some pretty old characters inside, it seems that atmosphere is casual, comfortable and in most ways young.
There are big signs warning that no alcohol is allowed on the front porch. I asked one resident if alcohol was allowed at all.
"Yes." He said. "On the back porch."
One point made clear to me the last time I went there to get a new brochure is that the price of a bed has gone up to $17.00!
Unique Qualities: They have a few "couples" accommodations, but they are acquired only on a first come, first served basis and except for those, everything else is "dorm-rooms"
Address: 4961 Newport Avenue
Comparison: least expensive
Directions: About a block and a half east of the beach.
Phone: (619) 223-7873
Price: less than US$20
