Scripps Institution of Oceanography's main campus consists of 180 acres in La Jolla.
Before moving to its present location in 1910, Scripps had been housed first in the boathouse of the Hotel Del Coronado (1903-4), which you can see on my Coronado page, and then in a small laboratory building near La Jolla Cove (1905-1909.)
Scripps became part of the University of California in 1912, and today it is a division of the University of California, San Diego. The Scripps Building was renovated in 1983 and designated a National Landmark.
A number of scientific programs are on-going and of world wide interest. The Scripps Marine Vertebrate Collection is one of the largest collections in the world with more than 2,000,000 specimens including rare deep-sea fishes. The Analytical Facility provides highly sophisticated equipment for use by scientists at Scripps, at UC San Diego, and, as time permits, the local high tech community. The first Scripps Pier was a gift from Ellen Browning Scripps originally built in 1913. The current pier, pictured here, was built in 1988 when the original was badly damaged by storms in 1983. At more than 1100 feet long, it is one of the world's biggest research piers.
On the top of a hill overlooking the main Scripps campus is the Stephen Birch Aquarium Museum. Some may be a little disappointed in this museum, as it is not as entertaining as one might expect. Rather it is designed for visitors to experience marine life of the Pacific and to learn about ocean science. It is the largest oceanographic museum in the country and offers a wide variety of educational programs and trips throughout the year.

Let me introduce you to Alexander of the Marine Room restaurant. He was prompt, friendly, helpful and gracious. Ask for him when you go to the Marine Room in La Jolla.
This tip is not about "tipping" nor is it about restaurants. It is about the classy service one gets in a classy place.
Many times that I've guided people into swank places, they hold back a bit or comment that they don't want to go into a place where the service people are rude and condescending. Guess that's the way it is in many parts of the country, those who are rude and condescending have an inferiority complex and must behave in a snobby way to make themselves feel more important.
Not so in La Jolla! La Jolla is a place where the majority of the service people are gracious and really a Class act. This is one of the reasons everyone suggests La Jolla as a Must See In San Diego.
La Jolla is a world class resort area and most of the people working there, that you might come upon, will be gracious, friendly, helpful and welcoming.
It's true that in most of the shops, hotels and restaurants you aren't premitted to enter while wearing beach clothes, and most of us would like to dress our best, but the cost of the clothes isn't considered when the service is given.
