Boogie Board Shack @ Poseidon - Del Mar

Boogie Board Shack @ Poseidon

Boogie-Boarding!

In the parking lot of Poseidon Restaurant, next to the Valet station, is a typical beach shack offering snacks and boogie-boards for rent.

On the north side of Poseidon's building is a pathway from the beach. The main lifeguard tower stands west of this path, and it is a simple task to reach the shack.

Boogie-boarding is much easier than surfing as you only need to lay belly down on the short styrofoam board and surf the waves. It's fun and worth trying out.

Equipment: All that is needed is a boogie-board and the nerve to try. Although nerve isn't really required, even the non-swimmer can do this.

The waves needed to have a fun ride are the smaller, shoreline waves and are rarely farther out than knee-deep water. So, if a fall off the board occurs, simply stand up and be saved.

The biggest risk is loosing the boogie-board after a fall. However, most boards are sensibly equipped with a leash that fits around the wrist. Of course, it is obvious to expect wrist burns.

Riding the Surf in Del Mar - Del Mar

Riding the Surf in Del Mar

Surfing!

Not all beaches in San Diego County allow surfing. The City of Del Mar does have surfing areas clearly marked out and if you aren't a surfer yourself, it is a very interesting sport to watch. Mostly you'll see novice surfers paddling out on their boards to catch a meger wave, make an effort to stand and then watch them fall into the roiling ocean. Occasionally one brave soul will make it all the way in and the success is magnificent to see.

Equipment: Eyes for watching is all that's needed.

However, if you plan to give it a try, you'll need a surf board. If you haven't brought your own, try Rusty Surfboards Del Mar address given below. The shop is located just a block from the beach so transportation won't be an issue.
