Getting TO/AROUND: Cruise Ships are coming into the port of San Diego all the time, it is simple to catch the Ferry or a water taxi to Coronado near the cruise ship dock. In the reverse, while staying in Coronado take the Ferry or water taxi across the bay to downtown SD, the Gaslamp Quarter or even a tour of SD Bay by Harbor Excursion. A day trip to Mexico can be fun.

Getting TO/AROUND: The Old Town Trolley Tours bus makes a stop in Coronado. It is an expensive form of transportation, but the convenience of being guided to the most interesting spots in and around San Diego might be worth the cost to some people.
Coronado is one of the regular stops this tour bus makes. Get off the bus in Coronado and spend the desired time in the city. Make sure to return to the pick-up point before the last run.
This is not the San Diego Trolley, some people get the two mixed up. This is a "tour" bus and the SD Trolley is a train that is part of the mass transit system in San Diego County.

Getting TO/AROUND: Coronado Ferry: This is the Ferry Landing Dock. The Ferry to and from San Diego runs frequently throughout the day and evening, about every hour. As a pedestrian ferry, no cars are transported, however bicycles are allowed.
Think of it as a mini—harbor tour. The ticket booth is located on Harbor Drive at Broadway next to the Harbor Cruise ticket booth.
The year round schedule is: -- from Broadway Pier every hour on the hour, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. -- from the Coronado Ferry Landing every hour on the half hour 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. (10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday) . The one-way fare is $3.00 per person, add $.50 for bike if you bring your own.
FYI: There is an early morning commuter ferry service for those going to NASNorth Island, which begins at 5:40 am.

Getting TO/AROUND: Coronado is small enough to walk around--if you like that sort of thing--I personally prefer driving my car, but it is possible to rent bikes, roller blades, and even these surrey cycles.
I've never tried it, but as often as I've been to Coronado and seen people scooting around, I'd say it looks like great fun for kids and their adults! Try it!
There are several bike rental locations throughout Coronado"
Bikes and Beyond at Coronado Ferry Landing, 1201 First Street #122, (619) 435-7180.
Holland’s Bicycles 977 Orange Avenue, (619) 3153, www.hollandsbicycles.com
Little Sam’s Island and Beach Fun 1343 Orange Avenue, (619) 435-4068
Wheel Fun Rentals at the Hotel Del Coronado, 1500 Orange Avenue, (619) 200-1400, www.wheelfunrentals.com
For those interested Crown City Cyclists have a 16 mile morning ride on Saturdays at 7 am. Contact Holland Bicycles (619) 435-3153 for details.

'Mode': AROUND
Category: Car/Motor Home
Getting TO/AROUND: Another way of getting around the island is by your own car. This is President Bill Clinton's mode of transportation while he stayed with friends--who owned the Hotel Del--in Coronado.
My car is a bit modest in comparison, local police don't hoover around it, nor is it flanked by the Secret Service, still, it is my favorite way of getting to and around Coronado.

The 902 bus route extends from Broadway downtown SD to the Hotel del Coronado and runs only on weekdays.
The 903 bus route extends from Broadway downtown SD to Naval Air Station North Island. It runs only on weekdays and is mainly for transporting Naval personnel and employee of NASNI, so, avoid taking this route.

I should have spent time here instead of just driving thru. I could spend hours and hours between the hotel's architecture and all those antique shops and cafes. Wonderful presentation. |
