A picturesque beach, complete with bolders, ice plants and white sand.
Friendly people will welcome you in their volleyball or soccer games. This is not a water sports beach, so not much surfing, except at the south end near the Hotel del, but boogie boards are okay. Most people come here to sun themselves or swim in the Pacific Ocean. Tourists enjoy this beach but most of the people here are locals and you'll see lots of big groups. Coronado is a popular place for work friends or families to have a beach party.
At the north end of the beach dogs are allowed and all year long you'll see dogs dragging their owners on to the sand for a wet run along the shore.
Be aware that at the southern end--south of Hotel Del and those ugly condos--and northern end--north, past the gate--of the Coronado Beach are restricted areas. These sections are reserved for US Military Personnel. However, while sunbathing, it is not unusual to see various US Navy planes flying low or to see a group of healty, well built young men/women running by while in training.

Shops of all kinds, places to drink and eat, from cafe mocha to fine dining, wading in the bay, picnicing on the grass or sand, listening to the sounds of local musicians, all offered at the Ferrylanding Market Place.
This is a rather touristy place I admit. Get off the Ferry and you're smack dab in the clutches of this trap! However, is it a trap? Are you stuck here with nothing but cheap souvenirs and expensive restaurants? No!
Stuck here? Not really. Rent a bike and ride the full width and length of the Island to see anything you'd like.
Cheap souvenirs? Well, maybe a few, but also there are specialty shops that offer things not found in the discount stores or department type stores. A collection of English and Scottish items can be found in one shop as well as samples of genuine American-Indian music and art in another shop.
Expensive restaurants? Well, yes, a few. However they are worth the expenditure IMO. Keep in mind that there are other choices that won't deplet the pocket-book. You could even walk across the street to the grocery store and pick up something for a nice picnic, walk back and sit on the grass or sand to enjoy the sun, ocean breeze and the bayside activity.

Strolling down Orange Avenue, the main street in Coronado, and you'll find many interesting places along the way. Antique shops, great restaurants, some interesting architecture and plenty clothing stores, offering anything from beach wear to designer creations of the seaon.
Orange Avenue is the main street of Coronado which runs from the south end of the city to the north end and stops at the San Diego Bay.
At the south end you'll find the Hotel Del. Turn west just north of the Hotel and the road will lead you along the sandy beach of the Pacific Ocean. Just south of the Hotel, turn east and the road will lead you along Glorietta, a residential street that skirts the old and sometimes elegant mansions built in the early days as well as the golf course situated at the Glorietta Cove area of the San Diego Bay.

It would be a shame to visit Coronado without seeing Hotel del Coronado. A stay at this world class hotel would be a treat for anyone, crown princes, presidents, movie stars or you, but checking in is not necessary for you to have a glimpse of the luxury offered here.
In the lobby is a lounge open to the public as well as several elegant restaurants, a cafe overlooking the grounds and the Sun Deck Bar and Grill. Once refered to as the Promanade, the Sun Deck is a lovely way to spend time relaxing. The view of the Pacific Ocean is awesome and so is the view of everything around.
I've been here many times, especially to bring friends for a treat. Whether or not I order food or drink has ever been an issue. So, even if you are on a budget, this is something you must see.

Traveling often includes some time spent on learning what makes a specific destination unique.
In Coronado this can be done at the Museum of History and Art. The city's buildings aren't as old as those found in Europe, but the facts telling the story of Coronado's creation and rise, from the early seventeenth century to the present, are alive with bits of cultural history, like the tent city that attracted people here during the summer. The story of Coronado tells about young entrepreneurs, like Babcock, Story and later on, Spreckels, who came here with a vision and helped create this lovely resort town. War time stories, Royal love stories, even movie star stories are told through old photographs and other displays.

If History and Art are not your thing than a trip to this building can serve you in a different way. Also housed here is the Coronado Visitors Center.
If you have the time, before arriving in Coronado, go to the Visitors Center website and request a brochure that may help you decide what you'd like to see or do while staying in Coronado.
During the summer, the city offers, "Concerts In The Park" and the schedule for these concerts can be found at this website.
The Concert Series usually runs June through mid-September on Sunday evenings, starting at 6:00 pm in Spreckels Park which is located on the corner of Seventh Street and Orange Avenue. It is open to the public and is free.
If you recognize this building from the above tip, it is because both the History and Art Museum and the Visitor Center are located here.

Things To Do: A Day Trip To San Diego!

A visit to Coronado should include at least one trip across the bay to San Diego. However if your stay in Coronado is long, you might want to make many trips to see the many facets of this vibrant city.
Instead of listing here all the things to see and do in San Diego, I will give you this link to my San Diego page where I have tried to list the hightlights of San Diego that would be fun and interesting.
There are several ways of getting across the bay, by walking or biking--take the ferry, by public transportation--bus #'s 901, 902, 903, 19, by car, ride down the Silver Strand / drive over the Coronado Bridge or if you like something more organized, take the Old Town Trolley Tours bus, which has a stop in Coronado.
