Unassuming Front Entrance
I haven't stayed here but know a few people who have and they just love it. I have shopped at the surrounding stores and one of my favorite restaurants is past the arch behind the hotel. Actually, it seems that part of the restaurant and the lobby of the hotel share a space.
I think it's a two or three star hotel, but there is a charm about it that I've always liked. It is set in the midst of a Spanish/Mexican style group of shops and restaurants and seems more European to me.
Summer prices start at $119.00 per night for a standard room and go up to $395.00 for a suite. The prices may go up as the years pass, but considering it is just across the street from the Hotel Del Coronado, it is much more affordable for many of us.
Unique Qualities: In 1902, El Cordova was built, architecturally, in the Spanish style as a countryside mansion and by 1930 had been converted into a hotel. Over the years it has been restored and preserved to maintain it's charm and beauty.
Surrounding the hotel are arched walkways a lovely courtyard as well as shops and one of my favorite Mexican restaurants, Miguel's Cocina with thatched covered patio dining.
This hotel is located at the south end of Orange Avenue. Across the street is the Hotel Del Coronado, and a block west is the Pacific Ocean. For those not using a car to get around, there is a bus stop near the front entrance of El Cordova.%sw*

The Hotel Del from the beach.
The prices change depending on the season. This is a romantic place and worth considering, especially for a special occasion.
Soon there will be beachfront cottages as well as the various room types in the main building. There is a whole section next to the north parking lot that is under construction, so be aware that things will be a bit messy at that end for a time. Ask for a room in south section for the time being.
Update:
The Beachfront cottages, or Beach Village as it is now called, are finished and they are a very nice addition to the hotel.
Unique Qualities: This is the oldest--or largest, I can't remember which--wooden structure in the USA. It is an historical landmark and the first to install electricity. It has been voted one of the top five resort hotels in the world and on top of everything, it is believed to be haunted!
This is a luxury hotel, and all the amenities are offered. There are several restaurants and a comfortable lounge off the lobby which overlooks the inner courtyard.
Downstairs is a small shopping mall and though the prices are high, this is no tourist trap, the quality justifies the expense. The Sun Deck has a wonderful promenade jetting out over the sand where you may sit, enjoy the view, order a drink or an expensive hamburger and at the west end of the deck, there are stairs leading to the Pacific Ocean . Valet parking is available at the front entrance, but expensive.
Many areas of this hotel are open to the public and if a stay here is beyond your budget, come for a meal, have a drink or just stroll around and enjoy the ambience at one of San Diego's most famous landmarks.

El Rancho Motel
Want to stay in Coronado but can't afford a two or three hundred dollar room per night? This may be a solution. El Rancho Motel is located towards the north end of Orange Avenue, and is priced at a much lower rate.
Of course, I haven't stayed at this motel, but have heard good things about it, mainly that the rooms are clean, the owner is friendly and makes every effort to ensure that her guest's stay is the best possible.
I've driven past El Rancho almost every time I've been to Coronado and like the way they've renovated the place, so thought I'd add it to my accommodation tips.
Unique Qualities: Fifty years ago this was a small apartment complex which later became a motel. Recently it has been renovated and there are about five or six rooms. The small courtyard has a lush Spanish flare and though the amenities are very basic they offer air conditioning, a microwave, refrigerator and TV with VCR and DVD player.
All rooms are at ground level and wheelchair accessible. There is, in some rooms, a Jacuzzi. The motel is about five blocks from the Ferrylanding and ten or so blocks from the Hotel del and access to the beach.

A Waterfall, A Pond, Ducks and Flamingos
The Marriott is located to the east of The Ferrylanding Market Place. It is in a secluded area right on the water and offers several restaurants with glorious bay views. So, if you can't afford to stay here at least stop in for a meal or even just a drink.
Marriott hotels, as a rule, are upscale and this one will live up to your expectations.
A normal guest room starts at $235.00 and a one bedroom Villa starts at $600.00 which should give you an idea of the prices. Make your reservation early because this Marriot is very popular with big companies and the hotel actually fills up.
Of course I haven't stayed here but have visited often for lunch, a drink or to check it out for a fellow VT'er. I think the most impressive aspect that I've notieced is that when I've asked any employee something about the hotel, even though they know--because I tell them-- that I won't be staying here, they have all been welcoming, friendly and seemed eager to help. Impressively so.
Unique Qualities: Though the hotel doesn't look fancy from the outside, actually seems impersonal and the inside has an understated elegance, the service is excellent and everyone is made to feel welcomed from the moment they give their car to the valet until the moment they leave the building.
The style of the lobby is a bit austere to my way of looking at things, but there is a style and elegance that is gracious.
There is a path behind the hotel and from this path you'll come to the Ferry Landing Market Place. Plenty of shops and restaurants to explore and of course, the Ferry to go over to San Diego. I especially mention this because if you think of renting a car, the price of parking at the Marriott is pretty expensive per night.

Almost An Island Paradise
I've never stayed here but have spent afternoons enjoying lunch at their restaurants and can say it is a lovely place.
All the expected amenities are offered and there are three pools. Their beautiful restaurants are open to the public so you can enjoy them as well without actually checking-in. My favorite is the Market Cafe, on the terrace overlooking the marina.
I have also been here to check it out for VT'ers considering a stay here. This is what I tell them. Loews is located on the Silver Strand, a built up road connecting Coronado to the mainland of San Diego at Imperial Beach.
This resort is not near the downtown section of Coronado, nor near shops and restaurants. The Silver Strand State Beach is just across the road from Loews so if an isolated spot near the beach sounds good to you, this is it.
I will mention two things that might be of interest.
1. Just outside the gates of Loews is a bus stop that will take you into downtown Coronado and the Ferry Landing.
2. If you have the use of a car, parking per night will add to the price of the room by about $30.00.
Unique Qualities: Lowes offers quite a few specials that are quite tempting. Each season and off-season something is offered to entice you to stay. Check out their website to see if something interests you.
It's useless to give prices, as they change all the time. Just know that this is not a budget hotel nor the most expensive.
During the holidays Loews often times will offer a special package or even as in the past, at Christmas time, a reading of "The Cat In The Hat" by the Cat in the Hat has been offered free to the public twice nightly. Cookies and punch served after. I've taken my grandkids when it was offered and thought you'd like to know about it too. Phone: 424-4416 for more information.
Though Loews is more isolated, it seems to me that they make up for it by offering a comfortable place with some choice in dining and shopping. I like it here.
