A SIDE TRIP TO ANTWERPEN

by lmkluque - last update: Jan 30, 2006

ON OUR WAY TO RUBENSHUIS

Peter Paul Rubens
Welcome to my Antwerpen page,

One of my Belgian students took me to Antwerpen. He gave me the choice of going to the Netherlands or to Antwerpen. If we went to the Netherlands it wouldn't be to a large city or even a town that I had heard of before. I had to decide if I wanted to add another country to my list of places I've been or go to a Belgian city. After some thought, I decided to see more of Belgium. I hadn't planned for a stop in this famous city and didn't know all that it offered. We had only a few hours to spend so my view of Antwerpen was rather limited.

Parking seemed to be the problem. We had to drive around looking for a space. As we drove down a one-way street, we unexpectedly came face to face with a police escorted convoy going the wrong way.

The big motorcycle cops ordered us to the side, and of course, we were happy to comply and they sped on past us, then we continued on our way.

The first stop we made was a visit to Rubenshuis, and it seemed the convoy beat us there. In the square parked all round were the cars we had seen on the one-way street as well as the police vehicles accompanying them.

Most of the house was closed--for the VIPs, who happened to be from one of the Embassies--but we were able to see parts of the inside and the garden out back. This picture is of Peter Paul Rubens, I bought the postcard in the little gift shop at his house and thought it was interesting to see this same picture on no less than three other VT pages.

I Hope you enjoy your visit,
Linda
