A DAY IN WIEN

by lmkluque - last update: Jan 30, 2006

A FRANTIC SEARCH AND SUCCESS!!

THE MAP I USED
Welcome to my Vienna page,

The growing volume of traffic and a dramatic increase in private motorized traffic, created the need for a number of road building programs that involved the demolition of historic buildings and the radical clearance of trees along boulevards?which contrasted with the growing environmental awareness of the population. This explained the fact that Vienna was not as beautiful at first sight as I expected.

Recently, more attention has been paid to preserving the priceless architectural heritage of the city, resulting in a number of rehabilitation and regeneration programs in the densely built-up old inner-city areas.

The Danube waterfront has been developed and redesigned to contain the constant threat of flooding and it opened up an entirely new recreation area for the urban population.

During the Iron Curtain years, Vienna served as bridge between the West and the Communist countries of Eastern Europe, making it a city of intrigue to many.

Before beginning the sightseeing plan, a way to the airport in Bratislava had to be found.

Unfortunately, the breakfast stop at the train station restaurant created a big problem. The only public transprtation, a 9:00 a.m. train, left Vienna for Bratislava before the meal was served.

It's a long story, but I'll tell you the short version, I went by U-Bahn and Autobus, from train station, to train station, to bus station, finally to the airport where I even tried to rent a car--No Luck!--A rental couldn't be taken into Czechoslovakia!

I ended up taking a taxi, which cost more than my hotel bill! I saw very little of Vienna, but made it on time for my flight from Bratislava to Kosice. The lesson I learned; eat after your plans are taken care of.

I hope you enjoy your visit,
Linda

We're all waiting to hear what that word was!?? Can't see what's in the pic well enough to venture a guess. Looks like a beautiful city...just the name evokes lovely visions.

I enjoyed your Vienna page, Linda, it looks as if some time could be well spent there. Hope to visit one day, but somehow don't think I'll choose your hotel!

Such a nice city Linda. I love going back to the little side streets to explore. Next time you had better just skip the breakfast.
