Hellum Train Station Converted Welcome to my Danmark page
In 1961 a wonderful English teacher offered her students the opportunity of writing to someone in an English class in Danmark. It sounded interesting so, I picked a name--Connie. We connected immediately, had the same interests, boys, music, boys, exploring other cultures, boys, so on and so forth.
After twenty seven years of writing we finally met. I wrote and told Connie that I'd like to see her country through her normal everyday activities.
Naturally, I stayed with her and her family in their home, a converted train station. She showed me her family home in Brondeslev, where she lived with her parents when we first started writing. She took me to her work, her husband's work , her daughter's school--where I was the impromptu speaker in two English classes. Connie and I went shopping at her local grocery store, Had Danish beer at the local pub--the Hellum Kro, which has since burned down. She took me to her town Church & Cemetery. She took me to most of her favorite spots and I got to know her even better and tears were shed by both of us as we parted.
Three months after I returned home I received a letter from Connie telling me that the letter I had written before my trip had JUST arrived at her home. We both, were struck by the realization that, without knowing ahead of time, she showed me exactly what I wanted to see. Amazing connection we had.
On this page I will share with you the Danmark I experienced.
I hope you enyoy your visit, Linda |
