Welcome to my Belgium Page,
As a Group Representative for EF, I had several groups of students coming from Belgium and they taught me much. I split my first class in two groups, those who seriously wanted to learn and those who were simply there to have FUN. One precocious boy asked why I had seperated him from his DUTCH friends. I didn't, at that time, know about the DUTCH/FRENCH issue. Of course, I learned quickly all about it.
My students were fascinated with the problem of racism in the USA and assured me that there was no such thing in Belgium.
During my frist visit to Belgium I got a different impression about that and confronted my next Belgian group when they brought up the subject of racial issues. "Are you prejudice in Belgium?" I asked.
"NO!" was their resounding reply.
Remembering what I had seen while traveling through Belgium I asked the students, "What about the Moroccans?"
"Oh, that's different!" They all replied.
I began to learn that most people throughout the world bare some form of prejudice towards fellow humans and most people think someone else's prejudice is "bad" form, but their own is justified..
This may seem like a negative introduction, but it is this knowledge that has helped to broaden my world view. We are all different and we are all alike--Isn't that a good thing?
Many of my Belgian students and Tour Leaders invited me to visit their country and towns. At the first opportunity I did.
I stayed with some of these friends and don't have "Accommodation Tips" to recommend but I hope sharing my experiences will be of use to you!
Belgium is an intriguing, beautiful country swamped in HISTORY and populated with very kind people!
I Hope You Enjoy your Visit,
Linda
Front and Center in the photo and in my heart.
My son married one of my Belgian students and they had my first grandchild, Alejandra. It was through this relationship that I gained a special interest in coming to Belgium the second time.
My daughter-in-law had a fear of flying and invited me to come along on her return to Belgium to see family and friends. I was delegated to the pleasant task of keeping my three year old grandaugher entertained during the nine hour flights. Little did I know that the darling angel would not sleep a wink. So, neither could I!
- Pros:Home to Loved Ones.
- Cons:Too Far Away.
- In a nutshell:Make the most of your time!

Good that you were given such a warm welcome in Belgium.
Smiling and nodding at your observations of here...rascist?..no..we hate everybody
An interesting and helpful page, Linda! Glad to know about your son, his wife and a grandchild. Your intro photo of Waterloo attracted my attention, but I didn't find a tip about it. I was there in 2003 and this page is in my turn. Thanks for sharing!
HAHA, I am often a BOB! Great page with very interesting tips!
Great page Linda! The BOB campaign was copied in The Netherlands, hahaha, and of course I had to be Bobette quite often. Wow, didn't know about those houses where 'not all is as it seems'
