| mermaid (syrena) the symbol of Warsaw |
The city of Warsaw, Warszawa in Polish, began its existence as a fishermen's village on the bank of the Wisla (Vistula) river.
The head of the village had a son named Wars (pronounced Vars) and a daughter named Sawa, hence the name Warsawa. The city's symbol is the mermaid. There were two mermaid sisters swimming from the North Sea. The younger one stayed in Denmark (where she is still waiting for her sailor), the other went to Warsaw. She was captured to be shown during the fair, and rescued by the city's people. Now she stands there, ready to protect the city.
And if you don't believe it - never mind, just enjoy your stay in Warsaw anyway ........ :-)
Knowing what was left of it after WW2, one can understand the phrase "the rising phoenix", which applies also to Warsaw's situation after the communist regime compared to the contemporary one. |
