Tired of watery American coffee? :) Try CAFE DE PARIS (Arlington T-stop on the Green Line), which is right at the end of Newbury St. Very trendy place frequented by an international crowd.
For typical New England food: THE OLD UNION OYSTER HOUSE, which is supposedly America's oldest restaurant (?!), located right near the Fanueil Hall shopping area.
For Thai food: THAI BASIL on Newbury St.
A little further down on Newbury St. is TAPEO, an excellent Spanish tapas bar. Sangria to die for...
Across the river in Cambridge (just take the Red Line to Harvard Square T-stop):
CASABLANCA -- a restaurant/bar that features Mediterranean cuisine, with scenes from the film expertly painted on the walls. Great atmosphere!
Similar to Casablanca is the new CENTRAL KITCHEN (Central Square T-stop on the Red Line), which plays Bossa Nova and serves food from various Latin countries.
Also right in Central Square is ASMARA, an Ethiopian restaurant. Try the honey wine!
If you're in the mood... stop by the HOUSE OF BLUES (Harvard Square T in Cambridge), which features a different band every night, 7 nights a week! A lot of the groups are local and 'unknown', but I have yet to be disappointed.... Tickets are inexpensive -- USD $8-12.
If you're in a Celtic mood, there's THE BURREN (Davis Square T stop), which has live Irish music every night and free step-dancing classes on Monday evenings (no prior experience required). This is one of the best Irish pubs in Boston, I think... There's also THE LITTLEST (just off of Bromfield St., Park St. T stop). Drop by and you'll see how that pub got its name. (It is truly miniscule!)
I'll add more as I think of them...
