During the summer of 1988 I had a chance to visit Bologna when the father of my Hamburg-born friend Katharina gave a lecture there. The three of us drove down to Bologna from Geneva, passing through the St. Bernard Pass along the way. More pictures will be forthcoming soon... For now here are two photos of the unfinished CATHEDRAL OF SAN PETRONIO (1390). The idea was for it to be the largest church in Christianity, but Bolognese aspirations in this regard were thwarted by the Popes and their Legates. Still, though, the cathedral's dimensions are impressive: 152 meters long, 60 meters wide and 48 meters wide. (Yes, that is a VERY young me on the cathedral's steps in the photo on the left! I am on the right; Katharina is to my left.) |
