Situated in Northwest China and in the center of the Eurasian continent, Xinjiang makes up one-sixth of the entire territory of China, the biggest of all the country's provinces and autonomous regions. Xinjiang is a region of many nationalities, with the Uygurs (one of the Turkic ethnic groups) as the major one. Uyghuristan (as the native Uygurs have historically called their country) was occupied by the communist China in 1949 and its name was changed when the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR) was founded on October 1, 1955, though it never really knew anything like true autonomy. The communist China has been exercising a colonial rule over the Uyguristan since then. The Uygurs have had to undergo unimaginable suffering and been subjugated to inhuman conditions under the repressive alien rule. Today Uygurs still speak their language and practise their religion (Islamism), but they still suffer from the oppressive policy of the Chinese authorities, and their culture is threatened with the massive increase of Han Chinese population in the area. I’ve never heard about Uygur people before starting to plan my Silk road trip. In Xinjiang I met a young man who, sadly, explained us what being Uygur means today in the Autonomous Region. They are allowed to speak their language, practise their religion, have their own business…but: when business starts to get really well, Chinese managers take the place of the local manager; to apply for a job in public administration Uygurs must deny their beliefs, and so on... He compared the Uygur situation to the Tibetan one but, unfortunately, Uygurs are almost unknown abroad . That is why he demanded to pay attention to the political situation in his country.
<FONT COLOR='#003399'SIZE='5'>
uygur |
