Reading is in the Thames Valley about halfway between London and Oxford. It took its name from the saxon for 'Readda's People'. It grew near the meeting place of the Rivers Thames and the Kennet which were the main transport routes through the ancient woodland which covered most of Southern England. It was the place from which the Danes tried to conquer the south of England before they were defeated by King Alfred at Englefield and Ashdown.

Most of the town is 'horrible' new, but if you look you will find some nice buildings and medieval churches nestling in among the concrete and glass. The newest round of building has taken a turn for the better and there are some very stylish buildings going up.
