Why Pogradec?

Pogradec was selected by the organization of Young European Federalists of Albania (or JEF Albania, for short) as the host city for their Youth in Action training course called "Make a difference through and in volunteering". Pogradec is a quiet town on the Albanian side of Lake Ohrid, the 2nd biggest lake in the Balkans.

The participants

There were cca. 25 of us, coming from a dozen of European countries, both EU members and non-EU countries. We've spent 9 days in hotel Kalaja, learning about volunteering and related topics, getting to know the host country and partying.

Summing it up

All in all, despite several minuses regarding the accommodation and transport, it was a fun experience. Pogradec wasn't really lively in November, but we've had a fun time ourselves. We've also visited Ohrid in Macedonia and nearby Korçë and Drilon, and also strolled a bit through the capital, Tirana. The whole country was euphoric because of the centennial of the independence of Albania, which added up to this trip's charm. Still, a lot of work needs to be done if Albania plans to become a mainstream tourist destination, and things do not seem to be going forward really quickly!

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Really low prices, picturesque lakeside
  • Cons:Bad infrastructure, no organized public transport to any destination, too much garbage and stray dogs
  • In a nutshell:A lot of potential, but still requires a lot of work to create a respectable destination
