cool place for a Propller - Halifax

cool place for a Propller

Split Crow: cool place for a Propeller but eh food.... Split Crow Review

Old and atmospheric Maritime pub that has you imagining another era with a convenient location and its own beer too.

Favorite Dish: I had an okay Halibut with mashed potatoes for CAN$9.25. The potatos were instant and fish a big dry. D had an awful piece of shark and didn't feel too well later that night. I will say that perhaps the fish suffered from lack of refrigeration during the aftermath of Hurricane Juan but you shouldn't serve tainted food if that is the case. At any rate, portions were small as well. Their house beers were uniformly awful though they did have other local beers on tap too. Try the Propeller Bitter for the best this place has to offer.

late night institution, Venus - Halifax

Venus Pizza: the best deal and open late night too... Venus Pizza Review

This was one of the places open the day after Hurricane Juan hit Halifax. It was absolutely packed and we were glad to find it. Had a funny experience taking this photo. I didn't get one when I ate there and forgot to take one during the day so on the last night, I just went in and oddly enough, the place was empty. I snapped the shot and left, but soon a guy from behind the counter came running after us. He wanted to know why we took the photo and I tried to explain about VT and that it was our favorite place in town. I guess he believed us as he let us go, or maybe he just thought we were crazy. ;)

Favorite Dish: The food was fantastic and very cheap. You can stuff your face with Middle Eastern delights like schwarma and falafel for about CAN$ 7. Pizza slices are huge too.

Comparison: least expensive

Directions: Corner of Barrington and Bloumen.

Price: less than US$10

very cool place in a cool part of town - Halifax

very cool place in a cool part of town

Highland Cafe: a taste of Africa.... Highland Cafe Review

This was a great find and one that came about looking for beer, as is usual for me. I had enjoyed the Propellar beer at the Split Crow and saw the brewery was on Gottingen Street. It was where the hostel we were to stay at was located and supposedly a cool part of town so we wandered over there to check it out. Glad we did as right in the same building as the brewery was the best place we ate in the whole town. A great little African restaurant with atmosphere and authentic tasty food.

Favorite Dish: D had a goat curry (CAN$10.99) and mine was called fulzi (CAN$12.99) or something like that. It was almost like polenta but a huge pile of it, coverd in very spicy sauce with meat. They had the Propeller beers in bottles and a great if pricey German chocolate cake (CAN$4.75). Great if slow service, but well worth it and an interesting place to hang out too.

Address: 2011 Gottingen Street Halifax

Comparison: about average

Directions: This is supposed to be the bad part of town, but at least during the day, it was perfectly safe and a very cool and colorful area too.

Philly Steak went well with great brews - Halifax

Philly Steak went well with great brews

Rouge's Roost BrewPub: Great place to wait for Juan..... Rouge's Roost BrewPub Review

This is a great modern but funky pub with great service and helpful bartenders willing to let you have free tasters. It was so fun in fact, we did not realize Hurricane Juan was brewing just outside the door until it was too late! lol

Favorite Dish: We both had a Philly Beef Dip with fries for CAN$7.95. It was very tasty with friend green peppers and onions, and quite filling for the price too. They had quite a few beers on tap like a fine smokey porter. Our favorite though was a tasty IPA. This Inda Pale Ale was unusually deep in color with a great blend of malt and hops for balance. Its long dry bitter finish got us into trouble with Juan as we stayed a bit too long drinking them.

Comparison: less expensive than average

Granite perhaps, but Juan got this too - Halifax

Granite perhaps, but Juan got this too

Granite Brewery: Closed for renovation? Granite Brewery Review

This was one of the more disappointing parts of our visit to Halifax. I could handle that the Citadel was not completely open but the premier brewpub in town was closed for renovations! Luckily, they had another location down the far end of the street. :) Also, there is a little music club above the Granite Brewery called Ginger's Tavern and they serve all the brewery's beers including all three of their cask offerings. It's a quiet little place early evening but sure it gets pretty happening later at night. Well, when there's not a hurricane going on, that is. ;)

Favorite Dish: The menu looked pretty eclectic and if the food is anywhere near as good as the beer, I would definitely eat there next time.
