Seattle sits as some alternative city of the future only the Twilight Zone could muster. With a 1950s B-movie sensibility, the caffeine-infused town combines a cluster of quirky neighborhoods around a modern spacy downtown more befitting of its corporate savvy image ala Microsoft and Starbucks. The city's real assets however have little to do with its entrepreneurial success, with water and mountains hemming it in and no less than three National Parks within a few hours drive. A smirky self-confidence pervades a populace consistently rated most literate in the US, but what else can you expect from a city surrounded by such natural splendor. For make no mistake, despite a constant winter drizzle and an active volcano on their horizon, Seattle is one of the most desirable places to live in America and a city very much on the cutting edge of the future.
For the tourist, Seattle lacks super sights. It's not Paris or even Washington, DC, but there is enough to keep you busy for a couple days. What it does offer is perhaps the most amazing of National Park gateway cities. True, it is not right at the entrance of any one park but it is within an easy drive of three of them. With tons of great places to eat, shop, and have a drink, it's an easy place to relax and enjoy what the locals have. Now that could take a lifetime.

Richie, this is a great page with beautiful photos of Seattle as well as your impressions of it! The tips on the REI store and Lenin's statue were especially interesting. I've only visited once (1981) and it rained during the two days I was there :-(
Treating coffee as "an intravenous necessary for survival" - well, isn't it?!! Sounds like my kinda place - drink coffee all day and beer ... well, maybe not ALL night lol
As always, fantastic food and beverage tips! Seattle is definitely on my list of places in which I would like to spend some time. When I get there, I will definitely have to check out Dick's Drive-In -- great tip! Cheers, Bill
Next time you're in the area you should also visit the water tower in Volunteer Park (I have a tip on that).
Beautiful page Richie! Love the BottleWorks and the Pioneer Square. These are my kind of places! Nice job!
A culinary journey round the world? How many times a day did you eat then? ;) Seattle sounds like my kind of city :) It would be fun to walk around these neighbourhoods observing the quirky creations of local artists - and have some coffee in between :)
OH, another place I associate with that sport, but also with Pearl Jam ;-) Sushi is always welcome :)
ahhh the memories! you've hit it spot on with your seattle page. a great city, with an amazing mountain backdrop only half an hour away! i was surprised to see lenin there too. lol :)
I still feel like Lucy, lol :-)) But it seems an amazingly beautiful and interesting town :-) Haha, that caffeine culture definitely calls me but do they also have caffè? Dick's is my place and I am amazed about the food & beer variety :-)
Too much beer, not enough cherries!
