Colonia was once the illustrious capital of Germania and renamed as Cologne remained Germany’s biggest city until the 19th century. Its glorious past came tumbling down when it was completely destroyed during WWII and though painstakingly restored its current persona is that of popular tourist town where those visiting come predominantly to visit the one building that miraculously escaped said destruction: the awe-inspiring Dom, the highest Gothic structure in the world. For those less inclined to gawk at those things high, the city offers a small old town that renders a glimpse of the city’s storied past while simultaneously affording some of Germany’s more renowned upscale shopping. Finally, for those thirsty from all their running about and prone to trying local delicacies, there is Cologne’s own Kölsch, a refreshing beer brewed only in its namesake city by an appellation much like champagne. Whatever your reason for making the pilgrimage, do enjoy a Kölsch while there!
My first trip to Cologne was a sunnier affair. I traveled with a good friend whom I'd never done a trip with before and it was a good result due mostly to his good nature in allowing me to do some serious beer hunting. You'll probably notice the difference in the photos as the trips were seven years apart. The second trip was with my equally good natured wife who was also up to the task.

Hi, Richie! You've got great stories! So many places to visit there yet...
Don't they have the old 0.1 liter Kölsch glasses any more? These were just right for a short intermission at the opera. Even the Komische Oper in Berlin served 0.1 l Kölsch for this reason. Great that you hopped off the train to try Richmodis Kölsch.
Hi, Great page! Thanks for the great photos and tips on Cologne. They will be a big help for my upcoming trip. I look forward to enjoying some Kolsch! Best regards from New Jersey, Bill
thanks your tips are going to be of great help ;-)
Hi there, great photos of the dome - BUT I must protest ;-) It is not the world's highest gothic structure. The Münster in Ulm holds the record, being three metres higher than the Kölner Dom. Only Köln people believe their church spire is higher LOL Sissi
Brilliant page, love your local custom tip ;-)
sounds like Salzburg in the rain all over again ;-0 I like the sound of that heaven and earth dish too.
Leave it to the corporations to make a good thing mediocre, or even kill it. I'm not keen on beer, but I want the independent breweries to survive and thrive.
Great page! The photos of the cathedral interior are excellent but it's the Kölsch tips and anecdotes that make your page stand out from the crowd ;)
I can almost taste the Kölsch myself after reading this page! It must be great fun finding what these German beer pubs have to offer but a 0.2-litre glass would only last me a couple of gulps! As you say, it is a good size for extended 'sampling' though.
