As the oldest city in Saxony, Meissen, at over 1000 years old, is often referred to as its "cradle" but it's not this distinction alone that draws people to it. The picturesque old town is crowned with a medieval quarter that sits majestically atop a hill, looking down on the Elbe River below. Along with this great array of architectural marvels is the city's world renown in the realm of porcelain and central role in the production of fine white wines. Despite all these assets and its close proximity to the Saxon capital of Dresden, Meissen has escaped becoming overly commercialized or crowded. In fact, many visitors to Germany will not have heard of it, but that's okay, it's their loss and your gain.

Hey Richie, it was interesting to read this page on some of the earlier adventures you and D had in Germany! All that talk of beer has now made me thirsty!
have you gone back to Meissen yet? wondering if finally the restaurant opened... :-)
very nice page, Ritchie! Apparently you DID enjoy Meissen!!! It is very understandable, we did, too!
I see your personal guide showed you the best places...;) great pics and tipps!
Nice to find such a wonderful town without traffic or heaps of tourists. Enjoyable page!
bet you can't wait to get back here ;-)
Soon we will be there and maybe this time we are lucky with the wine place :o)
Great page about a cute little town.
Goes well with the cake ;)
Nice stories to go with the beautiful photos. Some hunting lodge.
The photo of the arch with the shadows is outstanding. Let's hope this place stays relatively free of tourists.
