Warsaw fails to capture the imagination like Krakow; it seems to lack the romantic history of its miraculously saved from WWII destruction rival. Though the old town, particularly the main square, is perhaps prettier, it is nearly too perfect in a Disney-like fashion, to be wholeheartedly embraced. Add to this, a jumble between this reconstructed past and a searing race for the future in a maze of high-rise modern buildings, and you have an architect's nightmare. That it is not as user-friendly as Krakow only adds to the problem, but once you bear through this, and if you give it time, Warsaw will present itself as a true survivor and certainly interesting enough place to spend a few days. In fact, you will need some time to truly appreciate this enigmatic city. It's true there is urban sprawl, but there are also great open parks. Not easily explored on foot, it is a big city and you will have to use their elaborate mass transit. Finally, you will accept the old town for what it is, an amazing testament to the resiliency of a people that could not be beaten down. It is a World Heritage Site, not despite its destruction, but perhaps because of it. |

scottishvisitor Tue Jun 20, 2006 21:32 UTC Interesting tips on Warsaw the city you describe seems much what I thought it would be = the Old Town & Parks look inviting | Bwana_Brown Wed Mar 8, 2006 05:32 UTC An interesting 'oldie' on your impressions of Warsaw! Some of those old buildings look quite interesting but, as you say, that Palace of Culture & Science certainly does have the old Soviet air to it! | chiara76 Mon Nov 21, 2005 22:39 UTC Nice page about my hometown.
