Haarlem is fast becoming the second city of the Netherlands for good reason. It represents an easy alternative to or day trip from Amsterdam. It has a similar canal laden charm without the exaggerated dangers of the sprawling Red Light District or omnipresence of “coffee shops” where caffeine is the last thing on customers’ minds. Not that Haarlem lacks these features; it’s just that they are underplayed in favor of a more restrained demeanor. In fact, there is a little of everything that rival Amsterdam has without most of the crowds. Most day trip from the pleasure capital so if you spend a night here in the off season, you will be pleasantly surprised to have a bit more breathing room enjoying the sights and securing a seat in a café a well. So, by all means enjoy a day of this fine city, and if you can try the Haarlem nights, you won’t regret it.
