| Ghent's unsurpassed Gothic architecture |
Ghent gets a pass by many first time visitors to Belgium. On the surface it seems a notch below its rival cities of Bruges, Brussels, and Antwerp. It is more sprawling and not as user friendly but this can be seen as a plus as it deters the hordes that besiege the aforementioned tourist destinations. Though nearly as scenic, Ghent is not a cloistered museum piece ala Bruges. It lacks the art culture and cosmopolitan flair of Brussels. And is not the rich café-laden nightlife capital of Antwerp. But taken as a whole and given some time for appreciation it will seductively seep into your bones rather than knock you over the head. Centrally located it makes the perfect base to explore the big three on the Belgian circuit but given half a chance you’ll find it works its magic on you and you’ll find it the place you want to return to most. |
