The Appalachian Mountain Club has set up a great system of huts throughout the White Mountains and they are deservedly popular. With great mountain settings and homey rustic atmospheres they are the perfect solution for those wanting to spend more time in the mountains. We did not have time to spend the night in one on this trip but would surely look into it for the next time.
Unique Qualities: The Greenleaf Hut is in a perfect location for doing the Franconia Ridge Trail. It is a very busy hut and not one to choose if you want solitude. That said, it was very comfy looking and the food smelled great. The prices for food were surprising not bad either. It is not cheap to stay in the nicer huts but meals are included and tough to argue with the location and views. Oh, but you must hike to get to the best of them, like the Greenleaf Hut.

I was 1 hr. from the Mts, 30 mins. from the ocean, 63 miles from Boston, & beautiful lakes, mountains & scenery! There are NO taxes, and you can't beat the friendly people either! | Pawtuxet Mon Mar 21, 2005 00:25 UTC Terrific trail advice. Many of us Rhode Islanders find our way to NH for the lakes, mountains, and colorful leaves. Beautiful scenery. |
