Sandwiched between pristinely lefty green Vermont and ruggedly outdoorsy Maine, New Hampshire can be viewed as the forgotten New England State. Though home to similar covered bridges, quaint old towns and mountain scenery, it lacks the former's predisposition for alternative lifestyles and the latter's call of the wilderness to attract the true outdoorsman. Despite this identity crisis, New Hampshire has some of the New England's most spectacular mountain ranges and oldest, most developed trails and is thus perhaps the premier stomping ground of intrepid hikers from not only the immediate area but for also those from Eastern Canada. Though anything but off the beaten path, New Hampshire still has managed to elude the sometimes claustrophobic atmosphere of Vermont at peak foliage season or the throngs of New Englanders heading towards its only true stretch of coast in Maine in summer. But don't expect to find an empty wilderness. With the northeast's highest peak in Mountain Washington and well organized National and State parks as its drawing cards, locals know all too well what they have in their backyard, and can be found heading up the Interstate every chance they get. |

BillNJ Mon Sep 29, 2008 02:29 UTC Nice tips and photos about New Hampshire. It looks like a lovely place -- I hope to visit someday. | SteveOSF Wed Apr 2, 2008 17:30 UTC Nice overview of the New Hampshire's beautiful White Mountains. | Lafinwithu1953 Sat Aug 26, 2006 10:46 UTC I lived in NH most of my life, and I have always known how lucky I was. I was 1 hr. from the Mts, 30 mins. from the ocean, 63 miles from Boston, & beautiful lakes, mountains & scenery! There are NO taxes, and you can't beat the friendly people either! | Pawtuxet Mon Mar 21, 2005 00:25 UTC Terrific trail advice. Many of us Rhode Islanders find our way to NH for the lakes, mountains, and colorful leaves. Beautiful scenery. |
