The Marmarole and other Lozzo Cadore, Italy Things to Do Tips

The Marmarole mountain range is a series of knife-like crests in the 3000m family that jut out of a dense green forest, full of wildlife. Though the high reaches of these jagged peaks are the realm of hikers and mountain goats, the lower portions are just perfect for all levels of hikers. This magnificent region is not nearly as popular as many neighboring areas, but that's okay, it makes for less crowded trails too.

Directions: The access town is Lozzo di Cadore, just up the road from the more renowned Boite valley and Cortina.

The 3264m summit of Antelao was first climbed in 1863 by Grohmann, who was accompanied by local chamois hunter Matteo Ossi. According to legend, Antelao was a handsome giant in love with maiden Pomauria. Unfortunately, a witch put a curse on him that made him turn to stone if he fell in love.

Cortina was a surprisingly popular destination and on arriving in the middle of a thunderstorm on a Friday night, proved a hard place to find a room! But after securing one, we wandered around to find a very pretty city with many amenities for admittedly upscale tourists. If one had the money, it would probably be a great place as a base to explore the surrounding mountains and is certainly worth a stopover en route to more reasonable areas.

Directions: On motorway 48 in the heart of the Dolomites, close to the Tre Cime area.

The majestic Steinbock or Ibex is perhaps the most exciting wildlife sighting in the Dolomites and luckily their numbers are increasing with the recent reintroduction from Switzerland. They are surprisingly not shy and no wonder, they are out of reach in a few leaps and bounds, going where few men could even think of venturing.
