Venice never fails to conjure up visions of romance, perhaps even more so than Paris. Something about the visions of gondolas gliding down the countless canals and lack of automobile traffic make for a haven for twilight strolls, hand in hand. The downside of Venice is its over popularity that translates to not only too many tourists but sky rocketing prices, placing it out of many budget travelers’ means. This has led to a backlash of negative feeling towards the town concerning a lack of authenticity and even the stench of the emerald waters so much a part of its mystique. I had never been particularly intrigued but one day I got to see this place for free and even if the date was not my dream one, how could I refuse. What I can say is go during the week in the off-season. With some luck, you will get some sunny cool weather to alleviate the infamous smell and the lack of crowds will show you that Venice can indeed be the most charming of towns if you have it to yourself. |
