You can't put a damper on Sydney

by richiecdisc - last update: Sep 11, 2002

For some reason, we saw less of New South Wales then any other Australian state. Perhaps we were just in the mood to relax or maybe, just maybe Sydney overwhelmed us. It is a scenically situated city, with water in all directions. Lots of great restaurants and pubs merely added to the diversion. We’d been traveling around Australia for two and a half months, and done some camping/outdoorsy things in the Northern Territory and Western Australia. This seemed like a place to rest before tackling the crazy backpacker Mecca of Queensland. So, Sydney sucked us in, ever so seductively. We hung at the beach, did some jamming with the disc, and rode some waves. We ate out a lot in some great restaurants, learned a bit about Australia’s history in the museums, and sat outside overlooking Darling Harbor, enjoying countless beers. We did get out to the Blue Mountains but it was a day trip from Sydney, just a visual detour that still saw us back in town with all the creature comforts the city had to offer by nightfall. So, nothing against New South Wales, but maybe a hat’s off to Sydney. You just can’t put a damper on it.

Nice to see the view of the city from years ago. Amazing how some things don't change. Am looking at taking the Indian Pacific next time down.

Thanks for the 1993 updates on the 'best of Sydney' area! After all, it was 1979 that I was last in the neighbourhood! Wow, those cliffs and views at the Blue Mountains are fantastic! Your page brings back great memories of Aussie!

Some very good suggestions like a day trip to the Blue Mountains. I am not a fan of large cities but I wonder how the local beer tastes :-).
