When those from outside Europe first imagine the continent, their visions are full of castles and medieval villages of narrow winding streets interspersed with fairy tale forests and gently rolling green hills. Of course, those images are but one side of the story of the many countries that make up this diverse conglomeration. Increasingly, in fact, these preconceptions are often met with more westernized and therefore less authentic interpretations of what people come so far to see in the first place. Though east Europe was denied many of the amenities of the west for a long time, this isolation fostered a situation where the countries once behind the Iron Curtain were now seen as somehow more “European” than their western counterparts. This seems to be short-lived, however, as they strive for perhaps too quick an assimilation into the mainstream. But for now, at least, you can visit places in the east and with some effort, find just what your imagination conjures. One such place is South Bohemia in the Czech Republic. It’s certainly one of the prettiest areas of central Europe with a gently rolling countryside of dense forest, small carp-filled lakes, hilltop castles and small towns that seem unchanged, at least to the casual observer. It’s unlikely for this seeming “time warp” to continue much longer so plan your visit soon, before it becomes just another link in the globalization of Europe.

Fish soup is one of our traditional Chritmas Eve dishes... and it's not my favourite, but these sandwiches make me hungry. Blue sky really does make places look nicer.
