El Fogon: true local flavor El Fogon Review

Though just off the Plaza de Armas, this is a tourist restaurant that seems to still cater to Peruvian tourists. The menu is in Spanish only and relies heavily on Peruvian standards. The decor is a bit tacky and the flourescent lighting irritating, you can't deny that you are in a true local place.

Favorite Dish: This is a place to try lomo saltado (a beef strip stir fry garnished with cilantro and served over french fries and rice). We also had our first taste of mazamorra morada (a purple pudding made from purple maize).

Address: Plateros 365.

Comparison: less expensive than average

Directions: Really just off the Plaza de Armas with balconies with views of the square (well, sort of).

Quinta Eulalia: a world away from Cusco but right in town Quinta Eulalia Review

This little oasis in the middle of overly touristy Cusco is a welcomed relief from those in the Plaza de Armas, who try and serve up international foods with varying degrees of success. It is open air and on a nice sunny day, one can spend the whole afternoon and feel like you are out in some rural suburb, sipping a beer and watching life go by.

Favorite Dish: The menu is limited to what is on the chalkboard but I enjoyed everything I had. This photo is cordero asado (roast lamb) with a rocoto relleno (stuffed pepper), tamale (corn meal in a corn husk) and served roasted potatoes. You can eat very well here for $4 and the beer is some of the cheapest in town too.

Address: Coquechaca 384.

Comparison: less expensive than average

Directions: From the Plaza de Armas, head down Tucuman and make a left on Coquechaca for a couple blocks.

atmosphere yesl, food asi asi - Cusco

???: mexican is not peruvian

This is a general review of restaurants on Plateros, a small side street off the Plaza de Armas that caters to backpackers. If you walk down this street, you will be nearly attacked to eat in ALL of the restaurants that cram this narrow passageway. The places themselves often have a fun ambience and are a great place to meet fellow travelers.

Favorite Dish: It's not that the food is bad, it's just inconsistent with each place trying to make every kind of international cuisine all under one roof. Chez Maggie actually had decent pizza, something you will surely crave after a month in Peru and after a long trek. This photo was from a Mexican restuarant that had great complimentary guacomole, but the food itself was just so so.

Address: Plateros.

a lucky find - Cusco

a lucky find

Govinda: sometimes you just get lucky... Govinda Review

I am certainly not a vegatarian but I do enjoy it sometimes, especially if it has an Indian flair. I had read about a place called Govinda and though right in the center of town I could never find it. When we took a local bus out into the Sacred Valley and came back the same way, the bus dropped us off in a part of town we had never seen before. Once orienting ourselves, we made our way back town and found this other vegatarian restaurant with the same name. It was just packed but managed a laid back atmosphere just the same.

Favorite Dish: They just had a chalk board menu and we opted for the most expensive of the four items on it. It was only about a dollar a person with big portions. Not sure what any of it was but it was tasty, filling and I guess healthy. ;)

Address: 314 I gather from the photo, and I believe Av Grau

Comparison: least expensive

Directions: Take a bus back from the Sacred Valley and maybe you will see it on the way back into town. ;)

Price: less than US$10
