As is typical of colonial South American cities, Lima is built in a grid of streets with the Plaza de Armas in the center. This great square acts as an orientating landmark for travelers and a place to relax for locals and visitors alike. It is flanked by some of the best examples of colonial architecture in the city, with the cathedral here a fine example. Though dating back to 1555, it has been damaged numerous times by earthquakes and the present building is from 1746. The ornate bronze fountain that is the centerpiece of the plaza is the oldest remaining structure, dating back to 1650.

Just to the left of the cathedral is the Archbishops balcony, a relative new comer that was built in 1924. Its intricately carved wooden balconies make it seem older and are indicative of Lima as a whole.

A newer and more upscale plaza than the Plaza de Armas, this pleasant flower-filled oasis would be perfect if it weren't for peddlers selling their wares. It is from the early 1900's and statue of General San Martin is from 1921.
