Inca Trail: not only the Incas, but now the local villages

  • The first day of hiking brings you up a lush valley and past numerous dwellings. Things haven not changed all that much considering how many people walk through here. I was surprised there were more kids asking for sweets, but it was the offseason a bit. Maybe they were on vacation. ;)

  • Perhaps I should have expected it but it's not every day you can be in the mountains with this wide a variety of plant life. It was jungle-like and very colorful and only really thinning out on the passes.

  • This is the most elaborate of the ruins seen on the Inca Trail proper. You climb a narrow steep staircase to visit them and on a clear day, I imagine the views are superb. It was not a clear day but a bit spooky with the fog for added effect.

    Scenery: view from Machu Picchu
  • Tip Rating:
  • Of course, Machu Picchu is the reason you came, but what makes the site doubly impressive is the surrounding beauty with the craggy green peaks seeming to rise vertically from the valley and river below.

  • The tower of the sun is Machu Picchu's only round building, a credit to Inca ingenuity.

Great tips. I'm going to do Inca trail in October 2007, so your tips were very useful.

Really enjoyed your Machu Picchu pages - is on the short list. Just a shame the flight is so long from Oz.
