| wind-swept Elbsandsteingebirge |
Though Saxony stands as the most industrialized and densely populated state of the former East Germany, it also is full of both natural and man-made wonder. From the weather beaten bizarre peaks of the Elbsandsteingebirge to the hauntingly beautiful cultural center of Dresden, Saxony exudes a grace and authenticity that eludes more famous areas of Western Germany. It is true that the states of the former East Germany are economically strapped compared to their counterparts in the west. While this can give an initial impression of depression, this lack of funds and isolation has perhaps saved the area from rash changes that can often mean the death of the very thing that travelers come to experience: an authentic old world feel. Saxony has plenty of this to offer with far fewer crowds than you will find in more famous areas of this vast country, and at a fraction of the price too. With its close proximity to the Czech Republic and Poland, it has a true eastern feel. This feeling is one that Western Europe seems to lose more of with each passing year. Enjoy it while it lasts. |

Helga67 Fri Feb 1, 2008 08:16 UTC Great tips Richie. I'm looking forward to visit some of your tips later this year. | iandsmith Sun Nov 18, 2007 17:22 UTC How disappointing, I found some of your tips didn't even mention "beer"! Lift your game. Cheers. | Trekki Sun Jul 29, 2007 12:55 UTC oops, I almost missed your updates here :-) But you still make me want to go to Saxony in winter - looks gorgeous ! How come that I missed Schlafmützchen beer on my first read ? Cute name :-))) | Bwana_Brown Thu May 31, 2007 22:00 UTC Richie, another beer tour-de-force combined with an excellent overview of Saxony! The cities have some amazing architectural delights but the landscape of the rugged Elbsandsteingebirge blew me away! Konigstein fortress looks very impressive too! |
